Synopsis
A history, different stories?
On 14 November 1979, the legislative elections in the New Hebrides brought the independentists to power.
This dream of independence, which became a reality on 30 July 1980, was led by a handful of young politicians, most of whom were able to study abroad.
It was born mainly out of a desire to give back to the locals their land, which had been occupied by the colonists.
The country became known as « Vanuatu » and « Ni-Vanuatu » as its inhabitants.
Marcel Melto is a Ni-Vanuatu artist. He is part of the « independence generation », which includes people born at the time when the country was also born.
This generation is preparing to lead the country, but above all is questioning the path taken since the Franco-English condominium came to an end.
Marcel therefore goes to meet the great figures of this event which will unite all the islands of the archipelago under the same flag, as well as village chiefs but mainly simple citizens.
These personalities, through discussions that will focus on the period from the beginning of the 1970s to the end of 1980, will tell Marcel about the difficulties in achieving independence, the compromises that were made and, above all, the foundations on which Vanuatu was built.
They will tell us their feelings and intimate perceptions about the series of events that led to the Vanuatu we know today, but also what their expectations of this new nation were.
How do they think the country has evolved over these 40 years?
Everyone has their own story related to independence, which itself has its own history.
Marcel invites us on a journey, during which he will collect these stories, appropriate them and pass them on to us, through these discussions, but also through the poems they will inspire.

Une Histoire, des histoires ?
Le 14 novembre 1979, les élections législatives aux Nouvelles-Hébrides portent les indépendantistes au pouvoir.
Ce rêve d’indépendance, devenu réalité le 30 juillet 1980, a été mené par une poignée de jeunes hommes et femmes politiques dont la plupart ont pu partir étudier à l’étranger.
Il est né principalement d’un désir de rendre aux locaux leurs terres alors occupées par les colons.
Le pays prendra alors le nom de «Vanuatu» et «Ni-Vanuatu» ses habitants.
Marcel Melto est un artiste Ni-Vanuatu. Il fait partie de la «génération de l’indépendance» qui regroupe ces gens nés à l’époque où le pays voyait le jour lui aussi.
Cette génération se prépare à diriger le pays, mais surtout se questionne sur le chemin parcouru depuis que le condominium franco-anglais a pris fin.
Marcel part donc à la rencontre de grandes figures de cet événement qui unira toutes les îles de l’archipel sous un même drapeau, ainsi que des chefs de villages mais principalement de simples citoyens.
Ces personnalités, au travers de discussions qui se concentreront sur la période allant du début des années 1970 jusqu’à fin 1980, confieront à Marcel quelles ont été les difficultés pour parvenir à l’indépendance, quels compromis ont été faits mais surtout sur quelles bases le Vanuatu a été construit.
Ils nous livreront leurs sentiments et leurs intimes perceptions à propos de cette série d’événements qui a conduit au Vanuatu que l’on connaît aujourd’hui, mais aussi ce qu’étaient leurs attentes de cette nouvelle nation.
Comment pensent-ils que le pays a évolué au cours de ces 40 années ?
Chacun a sa propre histoire liée à l’indépendance, qui elle-même a son Histoire.
C’est donc un voyage dans lequel Marcel nous invite, pendant lequel il va recueillir ces histoires, se les approprier et nous les transmettre, au travers de ces discussions, mais aussi de poèmes qu’elles lui inspireront.
